Profile: Metropolitan Orlando Urban League

Metropolitan Orlando Urban League

Established in 1910, The National Urban League is the nation's oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. Today, the National Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its local affiliates.

Founded on August 5, 1977, the Metropolitan Orlando Urban League is one of over 100 nationwide affiliates of the National Urban League. The agency formed when concerned former City of Orlando Mayor Carl Langford spearheaded an effort along with other recognized and respected community leaders who felt the African American community in Orlando needed support and could benefit from an organization such as the Urban League. Mayor Langford formed a sponsoring committee and the Metropolitan Orlando Urban League was born.

The mission of the Metropolitan Orlando Urban League is to assist African Americans and disadvantaged individuals of Central Florida in the achievement of social and economic equality.

Our three-pronged strategy for pursuing the mission is:

  • Ensuring that our children are well-educated and equipped for economic self-reliance in the 21st century;
  • Helping adults attain economic self-sufficiency through good jobs, homeownership, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation; and
  • Ensuring our civil rights by eradicating all barriers to equal participation in the economic and social mainstream of America.
