Job: HIM Technician

The Health Information Management Technician performs a variety of clerical duties related to the maintenance of accurate and complete patient medical records. Job tasks and responsibilities include:

Files loose material in both the complete and incomplete medical records.
Retrieves record requests for internal hospital departments and outside agencies
Charts dictated reports on in the medical record, both inpatient and outpatient. Charts dictated reports on in-house patients when needed.
Greets visitors and takes appropriate steps to ensure requests are met or directs the person to the appropriate personnel within the department.
Answers the phone and helps customers with their needs or routes calls to the appropriate personnel within the department.
Provides non-confidential information to outside requesters such as insurance companies and/or patients.
Enters and maintains information in the patient documentation system
Checks records in and out of the department.
Retrieves requests for medical records from previous visits for the nursing units and delivers records to the Emergency Room and other areas as needed.
Keeps required statistics.
Gathers information and completes requests for birth certificates and related documentation.

High school diploma or GED required.
Additional coursework in Health Information Management or Medical Records preferred.
Basic computer skills required.
Previous clerical experience preferred.
Previous HIM experience preferred.
Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills required.
Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching and some lifting.
